This includes the events of Easter 1916 and the turbulent period leading to independence and the civil war, World War I and the ‘Spanish’ influenza pandemic of 1918-19, events still fresh in the memory of people in their seventies and older. As the recordings demonstrate, Dublin people were enthusiastic about sharing these memories. The testimonies presented here are those of a cross-section of Dublin opinion in relation to the Easter Rising, ranging from combatants and avowed supporters of the rebellion to those less disposed (or opposed) to the actions of the Volunteers. They also record the experiences and responses of neutral Dublin people whose lives were profoundly affected by the events.

RTÉ | Pictures of the Past | The War of Independence A collaboration with The National Library of Ireland presenting a collection of excellent photographs from around Ireland during 1920-1921. Ireland is a dangerous place in 1920 and 1921. There is savagery on the streets, and people are not safe in their own homes. Across the country, repressive British forces – regular soldiers, RIC, Black and Tans, Auxiliaries – are ranged against increasingly agile, aggressive IRA units and flying columns. Their deadly dance of attack and counter-attack brutalises the country. On both entrenched sides of this War of Independence, and in between those sides, are ordinary people trying to live in extraordinary times. You will see some of those people here, in the work of W.D. Hogan, a jobbing photographer who captured images of turmoil and of truce all over Ireland.
